Case Study:
This landscape renovation began with removal of a coi fish pond in disrepair. Construction of a pondless waterfall, generous soil amendments, and installation of perennial flowers and grasses established a beautiful focal point in this courtyard.
Hardscapes
Hardscape includes those parts of a landscape such as walls, driveways, paths, and terraces. These elements make spaces for you to be in your landscape—whether on a stroll, or sitting in a secluded corner with a view of the lake.
Before & After
Rainwater Harvesting
Large amounts of rainwater can be collected from hard surfaces on a property. The most productive surface for relatively clean runoff is the
roof of a home. During a one inch rain event, 623 gallons of rainwater will fall in a 1,000 square foot roof area.
This water can be used for irrigating lawns, ornamental gardens, and fruits and vegetables. It can also be used for outdoor cleaning like washing cars. Collected rainwater may be used for household purposes in accordance with local plumbing and health department codes.
The three basic steps of rainwater harvesting are collection, storage, and distribution. Roof gutters are the main component in collection. How they are connected to the storage depends on the design of the storage. There are a variety of below- and above-ground solutions. In some cases, distribution can be accomplished by gravity. However, the best results are achieved with a pump selected to match the way in which the water will be used.
